Q. My nephew's Bar Mitzvah is coming up and I know he's been wanting (and needing) his own laptop. I get a deep discount on MacBooks through my job and I would really like to get him the white MacBook as a gift. His parents are giving a really nice new violin plus spending money. Do you think my gift is not too much that it would overshadow his parents' gift? The violin does cost a lot more than I will be spending on the computer.
A. The laptop sounds like a wonderful gift. Yes, it's possible that it will grab his attention temporarily. But at the end of the day, a laptop is made at a factory and a violin is a piece of ART. I doubt that will be lost on anyone for very long. They are both wonderful gifts. And it's not a competition, is it?
What is the perfect gift for parents and brother?
Q. I am visiting my family after almost 2 years. I haven't seen them since my wedding. So, what do you think is the perfect gift for my parents and brother?
A. Get something that will fit their personalities.Like my older brother is a little kid inside so when I went to washington D.C. I got him a bouncy ball from the Smithsonian Museum. He loved it & I still see him playing with it occasionally.
It's your family so if the present isn't "perfect" they will love you the same & know that you tried your best.

What should I get my boyfriends parents for Christmas?
Q. I have been with my boyfriend for about 6 months and for Christmas we are planning on giving each others parents gifts. His parents are Italian, from the east coast, very into wine and good food. I want to get them something thoughtful though, something that they won't expect. I know he is getting my parents a wine rack, and I know they will like it. Any ideas for his parents from me?
A. Get them a couple of onesies for newborns.
