How much duty will be charged on a lap top sent to Canada from the USA?

Q. I sent a lap top as a gift to Canada and was told that the reciever may have to pay duty. Does any know how much they would charge and what is the limit that they won't charge?

A. The duty rate will be the federal tax (GST, 5%) plus the provincial rate, which in Ontario is 8% but will vary from province to province. This will be figured based on the value you declare. Sometimes they let gifts slide, but sometimes they charge duty. Good Luck! We get mail from the states and we were charged duty only once so far.

What kind of souvenier would you want from Canada?
Q. My coworker is traveling to visit family in Italy and doesn't know what to bring them as a gift from Canada.

A. Hockey jerseys from your favorite team. Italians LOVE their futbol/soccer, and can appreciate fanwear.

Technically, you're not supposed to bring food into other countries. You might be able to bring maple syrup in checked baggage undetected, but it might be cause for search and confiscation.

What gift should I bring Russians from Canada?
Q. I'm moving to Russia for half a year to teach children English and I'm going to be living with a Russian family..I'd like to bring them some small gifts from Canada, any ideas?? I honestly have no idea what they'd really appreciate or like? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A. I once gave bottles of good maple syrup to some Russians, but they were NOT impressed. On the other hand, the following items were all very much appreciated as gifts:
non-Russian liquor, such as whiskey or tequila;
quality leather and wool items (gloves, scarves);
silver coins and sets in official Mint packaging (especially if issued in the birth year of the recipient).
Also, I noticed that gift bags and wrapping made a good impression, which I personally consider useless.
