What are your interests and hobbies other than religion and spirituality?

Q.

A. I collect antiques, but not expensive ones. I'd be broke in a day if I did this.

What I do is haunt little out of the way thrift stores, consignment shops and the like for items which will work with the decor of my home. Some of these items have no value at all, while others have been astonishing finds for which I have paid only pennies. It's truly amazing the things people part with, never knowing the true value.

Some things which I collect are antique dishes and tableware. I found a gorgeous set of depression-era dishes from Scio pottery at our local mall. These dishes -- a full service for ten, with platters and bowls -- were given out with sacks of chickenfeed during the Great Depression. To the poor farm wife, this was the only way she could obtain company dishes. I can't imagine the haggling and trading that went on in order to obtain service for ten. The value of these dishes is more than 5 times what I paid for them, but I didn't purchase them to make money. I bought the dishes because I like them. Yes, I use them on occasion.

Of course, those dishes needed a home ... They look absolutely beautiful inside my 1930's Chippendale-style china cabinet. The china cabinet was a thrift store find, as were my vintage table cloths, antique salt and pepper shakers, vintage Madonna planters, antique chalkware figurines of Mary on the world crushing the snake, Saint Anthony holding Jesus, and Saint Teresa with roses.

Obviously, I collect religious items, and the boys often remark that it looks as if the Catholics live here. They have a point. On my living room wall hangs an old framed "Christ in Prayer," by Richard Hook. It was found layered in dust, behind a hutch at a thrift shop in a nearby city. At the same thrift shop, I found a 1920's "portrait" of the Holy Family -- a young Jesus with curls, His Mother gazing upon him adoringly, Joseph in prayer beside Mary. Each is adorned with faint gold halos, and a garden grows behind them.

Of course, I collect old Bibles, my favorite being one which belonged to Ethel. Ethel's mother won this Bible in December of 1937, as a door prize at an unspecified club party. Ethel's mother gave this Bible to her daughter as a Christmas gift, and I suspect it is the only gift Ethel received that year, as the Depression was in full swing. Ethel went on to marry in 1947, bore three daughters, and one (unnamed) son who died one Sunday in April at the ripe old age of 4 hours and 17 minutes.

I couldn't allow such history to gather dust on a shelf in a thrift store... Ethel's Bible enjoys a place of honor on my book shelf, and my children have promised to care for her Bible long after I am gone.

Aside from antiquing, I enjoy embroidery and baking, along with the usual reading and music. I once did canning and gardening, but health issues have dictated I give this up. Of course, I enjoy spending time with my kids -- those rare moments when teens actually want to be with their mothers. Tomorrow, we are going boating on Lake Erie. Perhaps we will find a thrift store to haunt on our journey.

How to make money as a teenage girl?
Q. I'm trying to earn a little bit of cash. What can I do other than making money off the interent? I'm 13, I can't do much.HELP! thanks people.

A. Everybody says get a job..but that's not always feasible...so other ideas:

Organize a yard sale--get donations from other family (aunts, grandparents, neighbors, friends)..price things reasonably, have a 2 day sale (on second day reduce all items)...give people a "bargain" if they're buying a lot.

Add some wrapped baked goods to your sale (choc chip cookies, brownies that are frosted with sprinkles)....see if you can get donations for those, too. Hang neon signs up all around pointing to your location...add balloons to your yard sale...spread things out so everyone can walk around and see things from street level. Put "like" things together (kids area, kitchen stuff, lawn & garden things, clothing items hang from a rope on a tree if you can or folded and spread out on a blanket, home decor items, etc)

Sell bottled waters, lemonade in cups (have ice on hand). Get a girlfriend to help, too, so it's fun.

Another idea: Take a course from the Red Cross for Babysitting: then you can offer your services to Moms who may need helping hands. You will have a certificate and remember to take your "job" seriously!!

Are there any older folks that live nearby? Go over to meet them and see if there are chores you'd be willing to do for a fair price....elderly ladies appreciate having someone help with vacuuming, laundry, maybe sorting things, carrying out trash, walking their pets, etc. Have the neighbor meet your parents so everyone knows who they are and become familiar and comfortable with the situation.

Sometimes I've seen kids sell candy and gum to other students in school.

Offer to do things around your own home for some cash to earn an allowance.

Make a craft item to sell: here's an idea for how to make KITCHEN ANGELS from using kitchen towels, a wooden spoon.....
http://www.ehow.com/how_4621194_dish-towel-angel.html

If you make a few, then go around to everyone and see if they'd like to buy or order from you (makes a great hostess gift, shower gift on top of a package, tea party accessory, gift from friend to friend, etc)...shop discount places for towels and dollar store for spoons and pipe cleaners.

Good luck! It will take some patience to accomplish your goal..but stick with it.

Making jewelry items, too, to sell to friends is another idea...decorated headbands. Practice and make sure your items are worthy of approval.

What do you like most about Starbucks?
Q. I'm an Indonesian and I need to get some information about Starbucks from all over the world.

1. Do you like the coffee? The atmosphere? The service? (is there any exceptional service you've experienced in Starbucks?) The cakes? The fact that it's a classy place for drinking your coffee? Or other reasons?

2. What do you think about the price?

3. Where is your favorite Starbucks located and why? (please include your experience too) ^^

Thank you in advance!

~Ming~

A. 1(a). The coffee is average. Actually, a lot of the time it tastes burnt. I've found smaller, independently owned coffee shops to have much better flavour to their coffee, and more consistency with each drink that they make. Starbucks' tea drinks are pretty bad. I always avoid them.

1(b). The atmosphere is nice. I like the music, the decor, the lightning. I like the little things that can be bought, coffee related items, music, gifts, etc. Some Starbucks are too small, though, which is uncomfortable Also, Starbucks used to be a more inviting place to go to before every teenager in the country decided it was "the" place to hang out. Now there's no peace to be found in most of them.

1(c). Service varies depending on which Starbucks I go to. Usually it's good - the employees seem to work toward being friendly, and are often quick to fix mistakes they've made, and quick to recommend drinks and flavours. However, often the people who work there are rushed, and quality can suffer. Once my order was completely forgotten, and after waiting 10 minutes, I had to go ask for my drink again, and nobody knew who I was or what I had ordered. Another time, I was given the wrong drink entirely. Consistency in how drinks are made changes a lot, too, especially when they're busy. The very last one I got was really weak and bland, which was disappointing, since I didn't notice until I was halfway home with it, so I couldn't get it fixed. It's somewhat understandable though, as I'm sure it's hard to keep up with the demands of such long lines.

1(d). I can't say a lot about the cakes because I don't eat desserts. They do seem to have a nice variety, though, and it's cute that they have seasonal items depending on what holidays are near.

2. The prices are too high. I can go to the local independently owned coffee shop and get drinks for almost a dollar less, the drinks taste better, and the people know me by name, so it's a more personal experience.

3. I don't know that I have a favourite. I can think of a few that I definitely don't like going to, but there aren't any that stand out as exceptional in comparison with others. The Starbucks on the Belmont Shore in Long Beach, CA, was quite nice - roomy, relaxing, friendly people - but I think it stands out more because of it's location than anything else. It's right in the middle of a fun litle shopping and dining area, and you can sit right at the window and watch people walking up and down the street.
