What is a good gift four a guy that is turning fifteen?

Q. I'm open to appropriate gag gifts, and anything cheap that a boy would think was funny or cool. He likes gadgets too. A site to look at would be cool.

A. The only group more difficult to shop for than teenage girls is teenage boys. Here are some ideas to help you find a gift heâll want, use and keep.

Sporting Equipment. Teenage boys donât make much of a secret as to which sports they like. Many at that age eat and breathe sports, so just keep your eye attuned to the kind of jersey heâs wearing, what teams he watches on TV, and what sports are featured in the video games he has to get a clue as to what are his favorites. Few places cover as much sporting ground as The Sports Authority. If basketball is a passion, take a look at backboards. A Lifetime Shatter Guard backboard sells for about $250. If heâs been a particularly good boy - -or if you have several boys in the same family - -the Goal Setter is the crème de la crème of backboards, selling for $1,100-$3,000.
On the less expensive end of the spectrum, a new Louisville baseball bat, MacGregor basketball or Wilson football will be appreciated. The only thing boys wear out faster than sporting equipment is tennis shoes.

Athletic Wear. In keeping with the sports theme, follow equipment up with a team jersey. Again, if youâve been paying only the most modest bit of attention to the boy throughout the year, you shouldnât have a tough time figuring out his favorite team and player. You can always count on Reebok for a good jersey. Name brand team apparel isnât cheap because the team logos are licensed, just as Disney characters are. A typical Reebok jersey runs about $80. A youth jersey set by Nike runs around $45 at Foot Locker. In the less expensive range, a pair of adidas running gloves can be bought for $18.

Tennis Shoes. Even if the boy isnât a sports fanatic, odds are heâll still appreciate a good pair of tennis shoes. There are styles, looks and price ranges to fit anyone. If youâre in doubt, do a little research. A good running shoe is different from one that works for soccer versus one that works for cross training.

The recently released new and improved iPod shuffle. 1.6 inches long it holds 240 songs and can be used for 12 hours before it needs recharging it might be good or Hat Rack:
There are many apparel items boys consider âmust havesâ. One of which being the baseball cap. For many boys, gathering and collecting baseball caps is an adventure into defining individuality and representing favorite clothing designers, baseball teams or other sports affiliations. Storing these baseball caps and hats can become challenging. For the teenage boy with a collection of baseball caps, this holiday season, consider purchasing the Cap Rack 24 by Perfect Curve. Available online through www.lids.com this cap rack is conveniently priced at $22.99 and holds up to 24 baseball caps. As an added holiday gift bonus with baseball cap collections in mind, consider purchasing the Water and Stain Repellent by Perfect Curve. Also available online at www.lids.com, at a low starting price of $5.99.

What's a nice gift to buy for family members that you rarely see and will be visiting?
Q. I'm going on a trip to visit my Great Aunt and my two cousins (both in their 30's) who I rarely see but love. I'll be staying with them for 2 days and I don't know what to bring for gifts! I was gonna pick up chocolates and wine for each person, but that doesn't seem enough, some how. Any other suggestions?

A. There are some great gift basket places that will make you a basket of goodies with any and all items that you may want in it.

I would just purchase them and see if they will make it for you. Or just do it yourself. I do that at Christmas and it's not hard at all. Get them a nice neutral bathroom set, towels, soaps/toiletries, BUY a large bassinet with handles (yes, straw baby bassinet!) and stuff the bottom with paper, and then fill it with the bath items, perhaps arranged in back, use clear shiney tape to keep it all from moving or tie with nice neutral or fancy ribbons, stuff that easter egg basket stuffing stuff in between, and in the front half arrange the wines, chocolates, herbs, oils, utinsels (coffee whipper/etc....look around at kitchen stores for neat gadgets) and really go all out. They will be WOWED.

A basket store will make it for you if you bring it all in for a fee I'm sure, if you don't want to attempt it all. I can guarantee you it's so much cheaper (although it's expensive!) to buy the items yourself. You don't get much from the basket stores if you have them do it all. Just have them put it together if you like.

If it's close to a holiday you can THEME it with appropriate oven mitts, towels, tea towels, and some stuffed animals or items related to the holiday. You can buy the basket wrap at any dollar store or card store and use the shiney clear tape it disappears on the wrap!

Good luck.

What is a good inexpensive hostess gift?
Q. With the holidays coming up, there will be a lot of parties and I don't want to spend a fortune on hostess gifts. Any ideas? Around $20 is good.

A. It depends on the hostess. If you know she is into cooking and kitchen gadgets, you can pick up a few of those. A cookbook is always nice. If you are not familiar with her taste, flowers, plants, some bakery items like cookies and pastry can be shared. Depending on the crowd not everyone wants wine.
