Q. My best friend just lost her father. I did not know him very well, and he was sick for a very long time despite his relatively young age. I am not overly upset over the matter personally, I am just wondering what an appropriate gift (flowers? card?) is or just being with her in general. Is it appropriate for me to be at all the services? They are a Roman Catholic family.
A. You don't need to bring anything but if you really want to flowers or a card would certainly be appropriate. If you feel like you need to say something keep it simple. (Example: I am sorry for your loss) Maybe give her a hug, hugs always seem to make people feel a little better. It should be fine for you to come to the viewing/ funeral, I'm sure your friend would be glad to have you there for support. Death is a difficult time for people and its at those times where family and friends are the most important.
