Best headphones for studio mixing and recording?

Q. I'm buying my boyfriend at 21st birthday gift- probably spend between 100-150. I just want to know the best brands for studio work. :)

A. Hi Ms. Asparagus

The best brands, in your price range, for studio work are Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, and AKG. There are also decent models by Shure, Koss, & Sony in your price range (all have good $100 models).

Beyerdynamic and Sony also have models in the $200+ range, but I think that's overkill.

Headphones & comfort can be a big "personal" thing: long hours with 'phones on can be sweaty or physically painful, so you might treat your b/f to a shopping trip or a gift certificate and let him try on various models.

I've dealt with the pro's at Sweetwater (Fort Wayne, Indiana), and am impressed with both selection and personalized customer service. Here's a link to their headphones section, for price and model comparisons: http://www.sweetwater.com/c412--Headphones

Oh, and in case any of the "Dr. Dre Beats" headphones spammers/counterfeit posters show up below, beware that: A) Monster products are overpriced, and B) 90% of the "Monster Beats" online are counterfeit asian knock-offs (and still overpriced!).

hope this helps,

christmas ideas already for my boyfriend?
Q. i have been with him for a year and last christmas he got me uggs and i only got him a sweatshirt. well now that im saving up i would like to get him a gift between $100-$150 he is 13 and he doesnt need anymore hoodies and has enough shoes. thanks in advance ! ** please no rude comments ?

A. I honestly feel like that's too much to spend on a boyfriend when you are that young. But you do what you want. I always like a girlfriend to buy me some cologne that she thinks would smell nice on me.

Where can I find nice chess sets online?
Q. I want to buy my boyfriend a chess set as a gift problem is I have no idea what i should be looking for or where to get one online. I'm looking for one between $100 to $150. What size "king" should I be looking for and what is better wood, glass, or marble? And what is the best online site to find all this?

Thanks!!

A. If you want to find nice wood, plastic, travel or themed sets. They have good ones at wholesalechess.com.

If you want to buy something nicer like marble chess sets go to chesssets.com.

Personally, I like the look and feel of marble. Wood is also nice depending on the decor. If he's going to use it often, I don't recommend most glass chess sets as they can be difficult to distinguish the different colors on the board during actual play and they can break easily. If it's more for 'show' and a nice accent to the house, it's fine.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with the size of the king. If you like the look and think he'd enjoy it, I'd buy what suits your taste. That being said, any set with king being between 3 to 4 inches height approximately should be fine if you want some sort of guage. That is a very nice gift and one that any chess player will appreciate coming from his girlfriend.

Hope that helps!
