What is a good stuff to buy in the Philippines?

Q. Hi guys I live in Chicago and go to Philippines (Makati city, Manila) next month. I've never been there or anywhere in that part of the world. I was wondering what are some good things to buy over there? (and maybe stuff I should avoid) Are there any good Filipino cosmetics, face or hair products that are produced over there? I would prefer organic or natural body care products or stuff that you're not going to find in US. Any interesting gifts to bring from Philippines? Thank you!

A. Clothes. You will love the Malls. You probably need hot weather clothes anyway. I seldom take many clothes, and just buy them there. Jewelry is also exceptionally good. You cannot get 18K or 20K gold in the US anymore. Buy some "Office Barong" shirts for gifts for guys. Much better gifts than T Shirts. Eskinol is a great cosmetic product, a skin cleanser. Lots of cosmetics have real Coconut oil, not just artificial scent. You will love the foods. Look for a fast food place called Chow King and get "Halo Halo" it will really cool you off. Look also for Siopao, a delicious meat-filled steamed bun. Even Pizza Hut is a treat there, totally different than in the US. You will have a great time. Don't forget to check out the 16th century churches! Makati is so beautiful. Make a trip to Mall of Asia towards the evening so you can catch the Manila Bay sunset. You won't forget it. 300 pesos is a generous offer to a taxi driver to take you from the airport to Makati. It's about $6 (but should be about 150 pesos). You will love it. Promise :o)

How much will it cost to send a package from philippines to sacramento, california?
Q. i will send my bestfriend a birthday gift, she lives in sacramento, california. How much is 1kg package or less will cost me?

A. I doubt anyone here knows postal costs in the Philippines. I'd think you'd need to go to the post office and ask them. It probably depends on how fast you want the package to get there.

How can i bring a new boxed laptop to the philippines?
Q. I just bought a dell laptop that I would bring for my girlfriend as a gift when I visit the Philippines. I would not want to get it removed out of the box. Would I have to pay big taxes for this? Do you think it's advisable to just put it in my check in luggage or in my carry ons?

A. As a rule you will need to open the laptop and turn it on to go through the TSA security in the US. if you carry it on (so it can't be left in the box). If you are bringing it in as a gift, it may be subject to a tariff/import duty. The only way around that would be to open it, carry it on, and then 'forget to bring it home' ;- ) on the way back.
