Is a Walmart gift card too boring for a 17 year old boys birthday?

Q. I don't know what else to get him. There are not many good stores in out town. It's either a gift card to Walmart or a music store.
And how much $$ should I put on the card? $30....$50.....???
The reason I chose walmart or a music store is because he just moved to my town. (used to live in California) and I don't know alot about what he likes.

A. do you have a Best Buy? thats usually a great store for teen boys. if not walmart is fine. i would say probably $50

what is the cheapest way to buy online without a credit card?
Q. im going off to college and i wont be able to use my parents cards and pay them anymore, so i have to figure out how to pay online...ive used a visa gift from walmart but that is a good 5% loss of what i use online, should i get a paypal? what are other alternatives

A. There are two options which do not involve getting a credit card. (Since you mentioned paying your parents for using theirs, I am assuming that you have the money just not the card.)

One option is to open your own checking account. Most banks (especially in college towns) have special accounts set up just for students. The debit card for the account will be affiliated with Visa or Mastercard. You can use it just like a regular credit card, the difference being that instead of borrowing the money against the credit limit the funds are taken from your account.

The second option is to purchase a reloadable Visa or Mastercard from a retailer such as Walmart or Target. (These cards a usually located by checkout.) This is different than a Visa gift card! You purchase these for a minimal fee and "load" them with a set amount. Once filled, you can use these just as you would a regular credit card with the money subtracted from the balance on the card.

If you do go this route, read the packaging carefully! You will want to get a reloadable card so you can put money in when you have it. Since many bookstores and other retailers online let you set up an account where they retain the account number of the card, having a reloadable card allows you to utilize these types of accounts. You will also want to compare the cost to reload the cards. The fee is usually just a couple of bucks, but it is a lot less than the interest rates on a real credit card. Some cards even offer the same protections as a regular credit card including warranty protection. Some also have the theft protection if you call and report it stolen. (Just be sure to read the fine print!)

Good luck with college!

Can I use a Visa gift card purchased at a drugstore to order something online?
Q. I wanna order this thing online.
I have no credit cards, and my parents won't let me.

So I might as well get a visa gift card at Walmart or something to get the thing. Is that possible?

A. Yes you can use your Visa Prepaid Credit or Debit card for online purchases. Just make sure and go to the cards website and register your name and address first.
