What is a good gift for a friend who is taking care of my dog while I'm on vacation?

Q. We are close friends at work, but do not hang out too often outside of work. She is allowing my 6 lb. Pomeranian to stay with her (& her fiance & their dog) for 5 days while my husband and I go on vacation to San Francisco. I want to give her something thoughtful, since I offered to pay her and she said "absolutely not!" What would be an appropriate thank you gift? A gift card? Homemade baked goods?

A. How about something that appeals to her family's interests?

Maybe a gift card to a really nice restaurant (plus "designer dog-cookies" from your dog to theirs)

Maybe ship some great seafood from Fisherman's Warf (like packed in ice and shipped next day) while you're in SF

Or something from Chinatown?

Or something retro - like from the Haight-Ashbury district (a la the Grateful Dead or Janis Joplin or the Merry Pranksters etc.)

But definitely something that appeals to their interests - that way they'll remember you as a great - and grateful - friend.

What is the right amount of money for a decent gift card?
Q. I usually make holiday gift baskets for teachers. I fill them with hand lotions, candles, cookies, candies, starbucks card etc.

This year, I had absolutely no time to shop ahead of time. I am planning to give a gift card and homemade cookies for everyone on my list.

How much money do you add in your gift cards if you had about 15 school staff on your list including teachers, helpers and specialists who are all actively involved with your kid.

A. It depends on your budget and relationship with everyone.
Fifteen is a lot of people so even $10 each will add up. I would imagine $10-$20 would be fair.
A $10 Starbucks or Target card would still be appreciated even in its small amount. Some teachers are using they're own money to pay for school supplies or treasure boxes so Staples or Dollar Tree cards would be fine.

I try to limit all gifts, including birthdays to around $10 only because it can add up and you hardly know some of these people.

Keep a look out for deals through out the year. Wal-Mart has three flavored popcorn in Holiday tins for $5 each. I'm giving them to all the teachers, bus driver, dance teacher etc. A tin of popcorn is not something I would purchase just for my self plus it's a great gift for movie nights during the school holiday.

For the end of the year gift, I'm giving everyone a Scene It DVD game. It regularly goes for $30 and I found them for under $8. What a deal! I understand that Five Below are now selling the Scene It games.

What is your favorite thing about Christmas?
Q. Is it giving and receiving gifts, the homemade goodies, snow, decorating or celebrating Jesus's birth or something else?

A. All the things you mentioned as well as spending it with family or friends.
