Q. I have been a parent volunteer since my oldest started kindergarten in 1984 and have helped with numerous end of the school year parties. My youngest is in 3rd grade and I think my creativity has taken a leave of absence (or just too tired). I am just not coming up with any ideas for a teacher present this year. What are some good teacher gifts that you can think of? Some of the things I have done in the past are gift certificates to restaurants, teacher stores, sporting events, book stores; fabric painted sweatshirts, tote bags, aprons with kids' names and handprints; flowers, plants, and trees; one year I did a summer survival kit with sunscreen, a book, a sun hat, etc, in a styrafoam cooler. All of these are thoughtful gifts and appreciated by teachers. Does anyone have other suggestions for truly unique gift ideas? Thanks!
A. I am a teacher and by far the nicest suggestion is a book with notes from the kids. You have certainly given wonderful presents in the past too. But no one can ever give the gift of real appreciation. I have many mugs, t-shirts, plants etc but the gifts I treasure and that I take out when I need a lift are notes from my students and a well worn little book given to me by a class over 22 years ago. I love all my gifts and feel grateful that people have taken time to select and give a gift when we are all so busy so I am sure anything would be fine...but a little book of notes from the kids...a priceless jewel!
Can you help me come up with some unique gift basket themes?
Q. I would love to hear your suggestions for unique gift basket themes. These would be for a raffle so there will be quite a large variety. Thanks for your ideas!
A. Wow there's so many cool themes,
1. candy (lots of different kinds, you can even do an old fashioned candy theme)
2. chocolate lovers (anything and everything chocolate - truffles, chocolate candy, hot coco, etc)
3. movie night (a dvd and/or gift certificates, popcorn, candy)
4. garden (flowers/seeds, gloves, shovel)
5. sewing (quilt books, scissors, fabric squares, tape measure)
6, casino night (poker chips, deck of cards, $5 or $10 cash all fanned out)
7. wine and dine (bottle of wine, different fancy cheeses, smoked summer sausage)
8. spa getaway (gift certificate for a spa treatment, loofahs, bath scrubs and oils, lotions and soaps)
9. sports (tickets to a sporting event, beer, or beer mugs, a sports jersey)
10. shopping spree (fill with tons of gift certificates and knick-knacks to use at different stores)
11. Luau (kahlua, drink umbrellas, a flower lei)
Good luck I hope you've got some good ideas! oh and if you need more, you can always check out http://www.birthday-ideas.com/ the birthday party categories can give you some good themes...

What would be a unique gift for a writer?
Q. My best friend's birthday is on Saturday. She is an avid writer and will probably receive many journals and pens. What is a truly unique gift I could get her that is writing-related?
A. Well - if she was thinking of publishing - Writer's Market 2008. Any writer who wants to publish, I feel, would love this book as a gift, as it is a writer's bible.
